Operation HOPE, through its international outreach arm, HOPE Global Initiatives (HGI) is committed to teaching financial literacy education to youth in South Africa through the Banking on Our Future programme.
Specifically, Operation HOPE, in partnership with Citi, Internationl Finance Corporation (World Bank Group) and the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund have commited to invest $1 million (U.S.) and to recruit, train and mobilize more than 250 local professional HOPE Corps volunteers in a new and innovative private/public partnership to teach 50,000 South African youth and young adults in financial literacy, dignity and entrepreneurship in South Africa.
Banking on Our Future is the recipient of the 11th John Sherman Award for Financial Education given by the U.S. Treasury Department in the history of the United States. Banking on Our Future is also the recipient of the Oprah Winfrey “Use Your Life” Award, which was accompanied by a $100,000 cash grant to expand our work in financial literacy education for youth.
The fundamentals of our award winning Banking on Our Future programme will be exported to the South African community, fully localized and infused into community based organizations, churches, schools and other “civil society” organizations in an effort to reach and teach youth in South Africa and to empower them through the choice making power of financial education.
