John Hope Bryant Helps Celebrate Winners of the Charles Schwab Foundation National Financial Literacy Challenge

LOS ANGELES -- June 18, 2008 -- Today in his role as Vice Chair of the U.S. President’s Advisory Council on Financial Literacy, Operation HOPE Founder John Hope Bryant was on hand to honor the ten top high school winners of the Charles Schwab Foundation the National Financial Literacy Challenge. The exam, sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, was designed to measure the financial knowledge of high school students. 

“Establishing wise money habits is key to building strong communities and a strong national economy”, said USPACFLVice Chair Bryant. “The Challenge encourages our youth to focus on the benefits of personal finance early in life.” 

Each of the ten winners received a $2,500 scholarship to the college or university of their choice as well as an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for an awards ceremony and special recognition at the June 18 meeting of the President ' s Advisory Council on Financial Literacy, chaired by Charles R. Schwab. In addition, the Charles Schwab Foundation awarded $1,000 to the high school or program that provided the student ' s personal financial education.

The Challenge questions were developed in consultation with economists, Junior Achievement USA, the National Council on Economic Education, the National Endowment for Financial Education, and The Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy. More than 46,000 students nationwide participated in the exam.
