Operation HOPE Recognizes Student Achievements in Financial Literacy Program

Salutes Local Citigroup Subsidiary, Primerica, for Providing Volunteer Instructors

January 12, 2006 – Today Operation HOPE hosted the Citigroup Volunteer Recognition Luncheon at Kanoheda Elementary School to celebrate, the advancements and progress in enhancing financial literacy among Gwinnett County students, as well as throughout the entire Atlanta area through volunteerism. Operation HOPE and Primerica have helped over 400 Gwinnett County students  successfully complete HOPE’s  award winning financial literacy program, “Banking on Our Future.” Chairman and CEO, John Bryant saluted the volunteers for their selflessness and contribution to promote financial literacy, pointing out Primerica’s role in securing volunteers.

“"Primerica has always taken an educational approach with our clients to show them how to improve their financial futures.  That\'s why we\'re so proud to team with John Bryant's Operation HOPE and help teach students in our community about the basic financial concepts that will help them learn how money works -- and how this knowledge can help them be better prepared to make sound financial decisions as they move forward with their education and careers," said Jeff Fendler, President and CEO of Primerica Life Insurance Company.

More than 1,300 students have completed the training since the program was initiated in the metro area in November of 2004.  This national initiative was designed to empower students to understand the importance of understanding money and emphasizing the value of learning to manage money and plan their finances effectively. This innovative course takes a highly interactive approach to training students in four banking fundamentals, including: the Basics of Banking, Checking and Savings Accounts, The Power of Credit and Basic Investments.

Founded in 1996, Banking on Our Future is Operation HOPE, Inc.’s premier financial education program for youth in underserved communities. The program is a winner of the Oprah’s Angel Network Award and the U.S. Treasury Department’s John Sherman Award for Financial Literacy Excellence. Using a growing network of trained HOPE Corps volunteers, the program has educated over 170,000 youth nationwide.

The school’s Principal, Terry Watlington gave the welcome remarks.
