Union Bank Partners with Operation HOPE to Teach Financial Education at Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach
Students celebrate the importance of banking & saving during Financial Literacy Month
LONG BEACH CA, APRIL 21, 2015 – In recognition of Financial Literacy Month, Union Bank, as part of its ongoing commitment to responsible banking and efforts to help increase youth financial education, partnered with Operation HOPE (HOPE), and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach to educate high school students about the basics of personal finance. Union Bank volunteers Natalie Cruz and Sophanary Ngov began teaching HOPE’s award-winning youth financial literacy program, Banking on Our Future, to members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach on March 11. The five-week course culminated on April 15.
“Union Bank is committed to educating our future leaders, and our partnership with HOPE helps us to not only support financial literacy programs throughout the year but to also encourage employee volunteerism,” said Union Bank Vice President and Long Beach Branch Manager Jennifer L. Tellers. “It is an honor to be able to bring HOPE’s Banking on Our Future program to Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach.”
The Banking on Our Future curriculum features five modules: Course in Dignity (covers the importance of responsible budgeting and money management), Basics of Budgeting, Get Smart About Banking (Checking and Savings Accounts), Fundamentals of Credit and Introduction to Savings and Investing. Each week, students participating in the program learned practical lessons by using hands-on calculations and real-world examples.
“It has been a pleasure to partner with Union Bank and Operation HOPE to bring the Banking on Our Future curriculum to our students at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach,” said Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach Director of Operations Claudia Torres. “The students participating in the program are learning critical life skills with hands-on activities. The way the class is presented to them is engaging and allows each student to process the information in a more personal and meaningful way.”
The classroom edition of Banking on Our Future is a vital element of HOPE’s Project 5117, and more specifically the 5 Million Kids Initiative, aimed at empowering 5 million youth to become money-smart and lowering the school dropout rate in America. Union Bank was the first national sponsor of the Initiative.
Banking on Our Future was designed to elevate the dignity, hope, and economic self-sufficiency for students in low-wealth communities through financial empowerment. Since its inception, the program has reached more than 800,000 students in more than 700 schools and community-based organizations in the U.S. and South Africa.
