HOPE Founder Awards New DATAWIND UbiSlate Tablets to Winners of the HOPE Business In A Box Pitch Contest in Denver


Latest HOPE Partner in Project 5117 supports education initiative by providing latest tool to bridge digital divide for youth

ATLANTA -- December 18, 2013 -- Operation HOPE, a global nonprofit that teaches financial dignity and literacy in underserved areas, announced today a partnership with DATAWIND to supply 7-inch full-featured UbiSlate tablet computers to the business competition winners of the youth focused HOPE Business In A Box Academy (HBIAB) for the Denver 2020 program.

Winners from George Washington High School, CEC Middle College and West Career College "pitch contest" on December 12 in Denver, Colorado, were the first to receive the UbiSlate Tablet. The juniors and seniors will use the tablet during their 10-week Business Role Model Empowerment Program to complete their weekly business planning assignments, produce a written business plan and funding request, prepare for a final oral presentation and launch their new business.

Prior to presenting the tablets to the business pitch winners, John Hope Bryant, chairman, founder and CEO of Operation HOPE, delivered an enthusiastic speech about the importance entrepreneurship to more than 400 students from George Washington High School, previous participants from Denver HOPE Business In A Box Academies, local bankers, HOPE volunteers and school officials. Bryant shared with the students his personal mantra “success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm” and advised them they may not be overnight successes but they do need to be tenacious.

HOPE Business In A Box Academies provide students in 4th-12th grades an opportunity to choose from more than 25 businesses that can be started for $500 or less, pitch their startup in front of a live audience and top leaders from their community, receive a HOPE Business In A Box Academy Entrepreneurship Grant, a business mentor and a savings account. HOPE Business In A Box Academies is part of Operation HOPE’s Project 5117, a new initiative, which aims to strengthen the economy by empowering underserved communities and eradicating poverty by the year 2020.

DATAWIND, Ltd. is headed by Suneet Singh Tuli, who spoke at the 2013 HOPE Global Financial Dignity Summit, has also been recognized by Forbes magazine as a "classroom revolutionary." Through the partnership, DATAWIND provided HOPE with new tablets, which will be awarded to winners of the HBIAB. Run on an Android operating system, the UbiSlate comes pre-loaded with apps for education, entertainment, gaming and productivity.
