[Updated 4/5/13]
Los Angeles – Thursday, April 4, 2013 – Operation HOPE is joining FEMA, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to bring you a free webinar on April 9th, about financial preparedness for disasters and emergencies. This is one of many efforts HOPE is engaging in to support “Financial Capability Month” in April and promote American’s starting early in financial literacy.

HOPE Coalition America, HOPE’s disaster financial recovery and preparedness division, will be highlighting the benefits of the Emergency Financial First Aid Kit (EFFAK) during the online event.
Fred D. Smith HCA president, will attend while HOPE representatives Suzanne Mayo-Theus, Ph.D. Assistant Professor at Southern University at New Orleans Campus and Ira Thomas Chief of Police Southern University at New Orleans Campus Police Department present information on how to use the EFFAK.
The webinar will also cover how to get the community involved in an effort for communities to start preparing for emergencies early. This webinar will focus on local tools, services and assistance available to individuals, faith-based and community based leaders, private sector organizations and emergency managers.
In addition, attendees will learn more about tools and guidance that protects the consumer rights of disaster survivors. There will also be updates on new and revamped tools and resources to make being financial prepared easy, available on and and the Operation HOPE web pages.

HOPE’s participation is also a result of an initiative through the Citi Foundation to promote EFFAK trainings to help Americans be ready before catastrophe strikes.
To date HCA has assisted more than 300,000 individuals, families, and small business owners’ financial relief guidance and support services to individuals recovering from natural disaster. Over the last five years, call-centers have helped HOPE deliver emergency recovery assistance, providing financial triage to victims across the country in more than 33 natural disasters, including Hurricanes Sandy and Katrina, the devastating Florida hurricanes of 2004, among others. More than 500,000 copies of the EFFAK and the Personal Disaster Preparedness Guide (PDPG) have been distributed since its creation in 2004, to better prepare individuals for disaster recovery.
