Operation HOPE Joins Government Effort to Highlight National Consumer Protection Week

Washington, DC – March 7, 2013 – Financial dignity nonprofit Operation HOPE today announced its partnership with, a coordinated campaign that encourages consumers nationwide to take full advantage of their consumer rights and make better-informed decisions.

This week HOPE will join more than 60 federal, state, local and community agencies in encouraging consumers nationwide to take full advantage of their consumer rights, as National Consumer Protection Week, March 3 – 9, recognizes that our shared prosperity depends on empowering all Americans to make sound financial decisions.  

“Not too long ago widespread abuses in America's financial system nearly crippled the American economy,” said Jena Roscoe, senior VP of HOPE Government Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP). “The crisis shed a light on the reckless actions of a few and the need for financial literacy and economic empowerment to protect Americans. Operation HOPE is pleased to join NCPW as a committed partner to help provide and promote the necessary tools for empowering individuals and families to make better financial decisions and be financially capable.”

The annual event kicked-off last week with the Hill Fair, held in collaboration with Financial & Economic Literacy Caucus’ co-chairs, Representatives Rubén Hinojosa (D-TX) and Steve Stivers (R-OH). The Hill Fair showcases free resources that offer consumers information about how to protect their privacy, manage their money, learn more about credit and debt, stay safe online, decipher advertising messages, and steer clear of fraud.  Held at the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill, the event was flocked by agencies dedicated to consumer empowerment and protection in areas from loan modification scam prevention, to credit card debt services.  Two representatives from HOPE GAPP, Lucas Turner-Owens and Johnathan Griffin, chaired an exhibition table at the event and fielded questions about consumer empowerment while connecting with congressional staffers and consumer protection agencies. campaigns have combated fraud and investigated the abusive lending and mortgage packaging that led to the housing crisis, helped students and their parents make smart decisions about paying for college through the “Know Before You Owe” campaign, cracked down on unscrupulous lenders and credit card companies that charge hidden fees, and done away with the practice of adding pages of misleading fine print to important financial agreements.
