Popular Community Bank President Carlos J. Vázquez Appointed to Operation HOPE National Board of Directors

Operation HOPE (HOPE) today announced that Carlos J. Vázquez, President of Popular Community Bank, has been named to Operation HOPE’s National Board of Directors.  With this appointment, Mr. Vázquez becomes Operation HOPE’s newest ambassador for its Silver Rights Movement that helps to provide low-income Americans with the resources to promote global dignity and free enterprise in underserved communities.

“Mr. Vázquez’s commitment to financial literacy and empowerment, as well as his standing in the banking community, makes him a tremendous asset to our board,” said Bill Walbrecher, Operation HOPE president and chief operating officer. “Mr. Vazquez is a longtime advocate for financial education, and we look forward to his experience and insight to help us empower underserved communities in California and beyond.”

Dedicated to providing better opportunities for financial empowerment, Mr. Vázquez has championed financial literacy, music and education initiatives for to under-resourced youth over the years.

Mr. Vázquez joined Popular, Inc. as Executive Vice President in 1997 to establish and lead the Risk Management Group, which included the Credit Risk Management, Audit, Corporate Compliance, Operational Risk Management, and Risk Management MIS Divisions.

Most recently, he has headed Popular’s Consumer Lending Group for Puerto Rico, responsible for the personal loans; credit cards; overdraft lines-of-credit; the mortgage origination and servicing business via Popular Mortgage, as well as the auto, marine and equipment financing business via Popular Auto. Mr. Vázquez holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with an economics minor from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, graduating on the Dean's List and as a member and officer of Chi Epsilon, the National Civil Engineering Honor Society.  He also holds a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard University's Graduate School of Business.
