John Bryant Makes Commencement Address at CUNY Queens College

Flushing, New York – June 3, 2011 –Operation HOPE (HOPE) Inc. Founder, Chairman and CEO John Hope Bryant delivered the commencement address at the 87th Commencement of Queens College of the City University of New York in Flushing on June 2, 2011.

Before over 2,500 graduates, a crowd of approximately 10,000 and nine members of the Queens College graduating class of 1941, who were celebrating the 70th anniversary of their graduation, Bryant addressed graduates and spoke to the legacy of Andrew Goodman, a young man who attended Queens College who was murdered during Freedom Summer in 1964.

“He was just like you – a passionate student who decided to spend his summer break venturing down into the southern states to register black voters and help Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and my mentor and personal hero Ambassador Andrew Young advance the civil rights movement,” said Bryant the author business bestseller LOVE LEADERSHIP: The New Way to Lead in a Fear-Based World.

Bryant, who in 2010 received the Andrew Goodman Award presented each year to individuals whose work exemplifies the Foundation’s origins and mission of promoting human dignity, civil rights and social justice through actions characterized by great personal initiative, selflessness, fearlessness, compassion, imagination, and achievement continued, “Andrew Goodman didn’t know what the future had in store for him, but he lived his life with the principles instilled in him at Queens College – a life imbedded in virtue. Let that be your guiding light as you start the next part of your journey.”

Bryant, who received the Queens College President's Award on this day, also praised Queens College for their purposeful focus on diversity and for viewing post-secondary education as an investment into the future of our society.
