There is help

At the dawn of the financial crisis in 2007, many homeowners began to face challenges as their interest rates and monthly payments increased. Seeing the effect on clients and individuals across the nation, Operation HOPE jumped into action.

The Mortgage HOPE Crisis Hotline (MHCH) was established in partnership with Los Angeles City Council President  Eric Garcetti in April 2007 as a response to the growing subprime mortgage meltdown. MHCH provides free services via telephone to individuals in need of answers and guidance on how to resolve mortgage troubles and avoid foreclosure. Staffed by HUD-certified home ownership and foreclosure prevention counselors, MHCH staff is also certified in the area of consumer credit and money management by the Institute for Financial Literacy’s Center for Financial Certifications.  The MHCH is staffed 24 hours a day. The toll-free number 888-388-4673 (HOPE) is intended for anyone seeking to take control of their financial future.

Our staff or a volunteer professional expert will provide intensive mortgage counseling, loss and mitigation guidance, mortgage payment deferment assistance, mortgage loan refinance and/or real estate sale services. HOPE partners with mortgage lenders, regulators and other organizations to assist individuals in crisis. Services that are provided include:

  • How to negotiate with your lender
  • How to apply for loan modifications
  • How to avoid foreclosure
  • How to sell a house and purchase an affordable home
  • How to restructure your existing debt and obligations
